Gabrovo once again proved why it is the undisputed capital of humor and satire in Bulgaria. Laughter, irony, and artistic provocation took over the city streets during the traditional Gabrovo Carnival (16-th of May) – an event that, once again this year, transformed the city center into a massive open-air stage.
Under the motto “The end is near. Let’s give it a break!” thousands of Gabrovo residents and visitors became part of a massive show in which laughter was once again the strongest commentary on the modern world.
From the early hours of the day, the city pulsed to the rhythm of the carnival. The streets filled with music, street performers, themed installations, children’s workshops, and a festive atmosphere that turned every corner of Gabrovo into a stage. The highlight, of course, was the traditional carnival parade – an impressive spectacle featuring over 70 carnival floats, dozens of giant models, dancers, performers, and international participants.
Once again this year, the carnival spared no one. Politics, social absurdities, international conflicts, economic crises, and everyday problems were transformed into satirical characters, filled with humor, sarcasm, and the typical Gabrovo spirit.
This year’s carnival also featured a strong international presence. Groups from Greece, Italy, and other countries brought extra energy with rhythmic percussion, dancing, and spectacular street performances. At the same time, students from Gabrovo schools transported the audience to different parts of the world through captivating reenactments of carnival traditions from India, Brazil, France, Spain, the United States, and Japan.
The evening program also became part of the grand finale. For the first time in Bulgaria, artists from the Italian show project IL MARTEDÌ DEL VILLAGGIO performed, impressing the audience with a spectacular show featuring music, lighting, visual effects, and powerful stage energy. Aerial acrobatics, fire elements, and the traditional pyrotechnic light show transformed the rainy evening into a true celebration of art and the free spirit.
And this year, the Gabrovo Carnival proved once again that it is much more than just a festival. It is a unique mirror of society-a place where, through laughter and satire, truths are spoken that often resonate most powerfully precisely through irony. The Carnival is the freedom to laugh at authority, at absurdities, at the world, and at ourselves. This is precisely what makes Gabrovo unique-a city that knows how to turn problems into humor and bring thousands of people together through the power of laughter.
The end may be near-as this year’s motto says-but Gabrovo has once again shown that no matter what lies ahead, it will always find a way to face everything with a smile and an inimitable sense of humor.
